Learning from Life’s Trials

Life is full of challenges that test our faith, our patience, and our resolve. From personal struggles to unexpected burdens, we all encounter moments when our problems seem insurmountable, and our hearts are heavy with doubt. It is a humbling reality that not all of our problems can be eliminated. Some trials linger, and their solutions seem beyond our reach. However, as children of a loving God, we are not left without hope. Though the storms of life may not always pass as quickly as we would like, we are given the gift of learning from our trials. Each difficulty we face is an opportunity to draw closer to God, to seek His wisdom, and to understand His purpose for us. In the midst of pain, confusion, or even fear, there lies the chance for growth and refinement. As the Apostle Paul reminds us, “we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; and patience, experience; and experience, hope.” (Romans 5:3-4) Through our struggles, we can be shaped into vessels of greater faith, hope, and charity.

Heavenly Father does not abandon us in our difficulties. In fact, it is often during these very moments that His loving presence is most deeply felt, though it may be imperceptible to us at the time. His plan for each of us is carefully designed, not only for our temporary happiness, but for our eternal growth and refinement. The trials we face are not meant to crush our spirits, but to build within us the strength and humility necessary to become more like our Saviour, Jesus Christ. The Scriptures offer insight into how the Lord walks with us in our trials. He is ever-present, guiding us with tender mercy, even when we are unaware of His influence. We are reminded in the Book of Mormon that trials serve a higher purpose—one that, in our limited understanding, we may not always immediately recognise. As we seek Heavenly Father’s guidance through sincere prayer and immerse ourselves in His holy word, our perspective is broadened. We begin to see that our hardships are often blessings in disguise, meant to shape our character, increase our faith, and refine our spirits.

One powerful example comes from the experience of Alma and his people. After fleeing from King Noah, they found themselves under heavy oppression from the Lamanites. Despite their faithfulness, they were subjected to harsh conditions, yet the Lord did not abandon them. Alma 36:3 beautifully expresses this truth: “I do know that whosoever shall put their trust in God shall be supported in their trials, and their troubles, and their afflictions, and shall be lifted up at the last day.” When I read this vers, it reassures me that even when the challenges of life seem overwhelming, Heavenly Father is going to be there to support me. Though we may not always see His hand at work, we can trust that He is guiding us toward deliverance in His perfect time. This trust in God, which Alma testifies of is an active expression of faith that He knows what is best for us, and that through our suffering, we are being prepared for something greater.

The story of the prophet Nephi can help us see how trials can teach us very valuable lessons and draw us nearer to the Lord. Nephi endured many hardships, including severe persecution from his brothers. Despite these difficulties, his faith never wavered. He trusted in the Lord’s plan for him, even when the way forward seemed unclear. In 2 Nephi 4:20, he reflects on the Lord’s constant support throughout his life: “My God hath been my support; he hath led me through mine afflictions in the wilderness; and he hath preserved me upon the waters of the great deep.” He recognises that every trial he faced, from his journey through the wilderness to crossing the vast ocean, was accompanied by the sustaining hand of God. His ability to endure was not from his own strength, but from the strength given to him by Heavenly Father. Nephi’s testimony reminds us that we, too, are being led through our own “wilderness” experiences, even when we feel lost or burdened.

The Book of Mormon also teaches us that trials refine us, teaching us endurance and humility. In Ether 12:27, the Lord speaks to the prophet Moroni, revealing one of the deepest purposes of human suffering.

“And if men come unto me I will show unto them their weakness. I give unto men weakness that they may be humble; and my grace is sufficient for all men that humble themselves before me; for if they humble themselves before me, and have faith in me, then will I make weak things become strong unto them.”

From this passage we learn that our weaknesses and trials are given to us as tools for spiritual growth. Through humility and faith, these very weaknesses can become strengths. It is through enduring hardship that we learn to lean on Heavenly Father, trusting in His grace and timing. It is often in our most vulnerable moments that He reveals His power most fully, transforming our weaknesses into strengths, and our doubts into steadfast faith.

As we turn to prayer and study the Scriptures, the Holy Ghost can open our minds to the divine purposes behind our struggles. Heavenly Father, through His infinite love and wisdom, allows us to undergo trials that deepen our faith, strengthen our character, and increase our dependence on Him. These experiences cultivate within us the Christlike virtues of patience, charity, and humility, preparing us for greater joy and eternal progression.

Heavenly Father never leaves us alone. Though we may sometimes feel distant from Him, it is often in these moments that He is closest, gently guiding us through our trials. As we trust in His perfect will, and seek His guidance with a sincere heart, we gain a deeper understanding of His divine plan for us. Our trials, though painful, become stepping stones toward a greater knowledge of His love and a deeper trust in His eternal purposes. As we read in 2 Nephi 2:2, we learn that the trials we face will ultimately be for our benefit. “Nevertheless, Jacob, my firstborn in the wilderness, thou knowest the greatness of God; and he shall consecrate thine afflictions for thy gain.”

One of the greatest blessings in facing life’s challenges is the companionship of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is our Comforter, our guide, and our strength. It is through the Spirit that we are empowered to endure with an active and hopeful faith. The Spirit illuminates our hearts, helping us discern the lessons embedded within our trials and pointing us toward paths of peace and resolution. The Lord Jesus Christ assured us that the Holy Spirit would dwell with us, offering comfort and wisdom in our times of need: “But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.” (John 14:26) In moments of weakness, the Spirit enables us to persevere and grow stronger in faith. While we may not always be able to remove the challenges from our lives, we can find solace in the knowledge that God is with us every step of the way. With His help, we can be refined through our trials, growing in wisdom and strength. As we lean on the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we are equipped to face each day, not with fear, but with the assurance that God’s love is constant and that His grace is sufficient.

Let’s approach our challenges not with despair but with faith. As we are reminded in Proverbs, “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” (Proverbs 3:5-6) All of our problems are not going to vanish overnight, but we do have the assurance that we are never without divine direction. In God’s perfect timing, we will find peace, and through His grace, we will be strengthened to endure, learn, and ultimately overcome.

Personally, I can testify that no suffering is wasted in the hands of a loving God. He consecrates our afflictions for our eternal good, transforming our trials into means for growth, and our hardships into opportunities to draw closer to Him. Let’s continue holding fast to the truth that Heavenly Father is always with us, even in our darkest hours, and that through His gentle care and guidance, we are being led to a place of peace and joy beyond our current understanding.

I say this in the name of Jesus Christ, amen.
