In Exodus 18, Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, observes Moses trying to judge all the disputes of the Israelites by himself. Recognising the inefficiency and potential burnout, Jethro advises Moses to delegate responsibilities. Moses heeds this counsel, appointing capable men to assist him, thereby easing his burden and creating a more effective system of governance. This story demonstrates the value of listening to the wisdom of elders, whose experience can offer practical solutions to complex problems.
In the New Testament, Paul serves as a mentor to the younger Timothy. Paul’s letters to Timothy are filled with advice, encouragement, and instruction. For example, in 2 Timothy 3:14-15, Paul reminds Timothy to continue in what he has learned from the Holy Scriptures and from Paul himself. This mentorship shows the role of elder generations in guiding and nurturing the faith and development of younger individuals.
In the Book of Mormon, Lehi, a prophet and the patriarch of his family, provides essential guidance to his sons as they journey from Jerusalem to the promised land. Their counsel, based on years of study, prayer, and service, offers a depth of understanding that is invaluable to members of all ages.
Older members often have more time to dedicate to family history research and temple work. Their efforts in these areas fulfil the prophecy of turning the hearts of the children to their fathers (Malachi 4:6). By preserving and sharing family histories, they strengthen the connection between generations and ensure that the stories and sacrifices of ancestors are remembered and honoured.
Within families and congregations, older members serve as spiritual mentors. Their testimonies and life experiences provide encouragement and guidance to younger members. This mentorship helps to develop a strong sense of community and continuity of faith.
