“Behold, I am God and have spoken it; these Commandments are of me, and were given unto my servants in their weakness, after the manner of their language, that they might come to understanding.”
(D&C 1:24)
God, in His infinite wisdom and mercy, speaks to His children according to their capacity to understand. He acknowledges our human frailties and limitations, yet He does not withhold His Commandments from us. Instead, He reveals His will in a manner suited to our language, our cultural understanding, and our mortal condition, so that His truth may penetrate our hearts and minds.
In this passage, it is not difficult to reflect on the humility and patience of the Lord as He engages with His creation. He does not expect perfection from us but provides His guidance in ways we can grasp, using the very tools of language and reason that are accessible to us. For me, this is a reminder to approach His Commandments with gratitude and reverence, knowing they are gifts of divine communication adapted to our needs. It also teaches patience and compassion in our own efforts to share truth with others—recognising that we, too, must speak to others in ways they can understand, with simplicity, clarity, and love. God’s revelation in this way is an act of grace that reveals His desire for us to grow in knowledge and righteousness, even through our weaknesses.
