The Life to Come
Scriptures
“If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.” (1 Corinthians 15:19) “This life is the time for men to prepare to meet God; yea, behold the day of this life is the day for men to perform their labours.” (Alma 34:32)
Reflection
We live in a world that cries out for immediacy—immediate results, immediate pleasure, immediate reward. But the Gospel of Jesus Christ teaches us patience, perspective, and the reality that this world is but a fleeting moment in the eternal scheme of Heavenly Father’s plan. Paul reminds us that our hope is not confined to mortality. To anchor our trust in Christ only for worldly advantage would be to strip the Gospel of its power. The Saints are called to look beyond the veil.
In the Book of Mormon, Alma warns us that mortality is a proving ground of eternal consequence. This is the moment to prepare, to labour, and to serve. The labours we perform here are measured not only by outward action, but by the depth of our intent, the sincerity of our devotion, and our loyalty to the covenants we have made.
To live for the world to come is to live deliberately, turning our hearts toward Christ and away from self-centred pursuits. This requires repentance, sacrifice, and the resolve to endure. And yet, it is not a burdensome life—it is a life filled with divine companionship, assurance, and the joy of eternal promises.
There is more than this. There is resurrection, there is reunion, and there is exaltation in the presence of the Father. Our faith points forward to something unseen, but real. Every commandment we obey, every quiet act of service we render, every temptation we resist, every prayer we offer—they echo in eternity.
