“HEARKEN, O YE PEOPLE”
Doctrine and Covenants 1
The following questions are meant to serve as a basic guide in the study of Doctrine and Covenants 1 for January 6–12, based on the theme “Hearken, O Ye People” along with the Come Follow Me book. These questions are designed for personal reflection in order to help deepen understanding and encourage thoughtful engagement.
- Why do you think it was significant that a preface was given to Doctrine and Covenants?
- How does this emphasize the importance of the revelations given to Joseph Smith?
- How does recognizing the historical context (a small, relatively unknown group of believers led by a young prophet) affect your understanding of the Lord’s confidence in His servants?
- Verse 4 refers to a “voice of warning” for all inhabitants of the earth. What is the nature of this warning, and why do you think it was necessary to proclaim it universally?
- In verse 8, the Lord declares, “I the Lord, knowing the calamity which should come upon the inhabitants of the earth…” What are some of the calamities the Lord might be referring to? How does this demonstrate His love and concern for humanity?
- Verse 22 calls on the Saints to establish God’s “everlasting covenant.” What is this covenant, and how can believers today participate in its establishment?
- The Lord calls “the weak and the simple” (verse 23) to carry forth His work. Why do you think God chooses humble and ordinary people rather than those the world might consider strong or wise?
- In verse 30, the Lord speaks of bringing His Church “out of obscurity and out of darkness.” What lessons can we draw from this statement about the growth and mission of the Church today?
- How can you personally “hearken” (actively listen and obey) to the voice of the Lord as admonished in verse 1? What does it mean to listen with your heart and act on His teachings?
- Reflecting on verse 35, which speaks of peace being taken from the earth, how does your faith in Christ provide hope in a world of increasing turmoil?
- How can you help share the message of repentance and the everlasting covenant in your own sphere of influence?
The above is meant to supplement your study of Doctrine & Covenants, and is not meant to replace the Church’s curriculum.
