“Behold, O Lord, thou canst do this. We know that thou art able to show forth great power, which looks small unto the understanding of men.” (Ether 3:5)
I think the verse of the day beautifully captures a significant principle of our faith—that God’s power, though often misunderstood or overlooked by human understanding, is boundless and supreme. The brother of Jared, in his humble petition to God, recognised that even though mortal perspective may diminish the vastness of divine power, God is infinitely capable of achieving what is beyond our comprehension. This acknowledgment shows us the contrast between human limitations and divine omnipotence, calling us to trust in Heavenly Father’s capacity to work wonders, even when they seem implausible to our limited minds.
This truth is shown to us throughout the Scriptures. In Isaiah 55:8-9, Jehovah declares, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts; neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.” The Lord’s perspective vastly transcends ours, encouraging us to rely on His wisdom over our own. Similarly, in Luke 1:37, we read, “For with God nothing can be impossible.” This verse, spoken in the context of the miraculous conception of Jesus, reinforces that God’s power is not bound by natural laws or human reasoning. Like the brother of Jared, we are invited to trust fully in God’s ability to bring about His purposes.
In Proverbs 3:5-6, we are counselled to “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” I think this verse correlates perfectly with Ether 3:5, calling us to have faith in God’s omnipotence even when His ways and timing are obscure to us. By placing our trust in Heavenly Father, we open ourselves to witnessing His “great power,” which may initially seem small but is indeed vast and marvellous in its effect.
When faced with challenges that seem overwhelming or when our limited knowledge leaves us feeling inadequate, we can remember that the Lord’s ways are higher than ours. We often find ourselves focused on what appears possible by human standards, overlooking how Heavenly Father can bring to pass what we might think improbable or impossible. By choosing to trust that God has the power to influence our lives and resolve our challenges, we release our grip on worry and instead place our faith in His greater wisdom and timing. This mindset encourages us to approach prayer and faith with humility, acknowledging that God’s vision far exceeds our own. When we remember that His power may appear “small unto the understanding of men,” we prepare our hearts to be open to His often-subtle ways of blessing us.
We may not see immediate solutions or the outcomes we imagine, but by trusting in God’s boundless capability, we bring ourselves in accord with His divine plan and allow Him to work in and through us. This trust not only brings peace to our hearts but also allows us to be a witness to God’s quiet, life-changing miracles in our daily lives.
