Living a Virtuous Life in Word and Deed

As disciples of Jesus Christ, we are called to live a life of virtue, reflecting His light through our actions, our thoughts, and our words. In a world where foul language and coarse speech are commonplace, the Lord invites us to rise above such behaviour, embracing purity in our communication and sincerity in our hearts.

The Apostle Paul admonished the saints in Ephesus, saying, “Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.” (Ephesians 4:29) Words possess the power to build up or to tear down; they reveal the condition of our hearts and influence those around us. James said, “Even so, the tongue is a little member and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth! And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity; so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.” (James 3:5-6) By refraining from the use of foul language, we cultivate an environment where the Spirit of the Lord can dwell, and we demonstrate respect for God’s creation, including ourselves and those we encounter.

Authentic Christian living goes beyond refraining from specific behaviours; it is about embodying the virtues of Christ in every facet of life. This means assuring that our thoughts, desires, and actions are in accord with the teachings of our Saviour. Virtue encompasses not only chastity but also integrity, honesty, humility, and kindness. These traits, when properly cultivated, become a source of hope and righteousness in a world that seeks pleasures over eternal truths.

The Book of Mormon offers significant insight into this principle: “But this much I can tell you, that if ye do not watch yourselves, and your thoughts, and your words, and your deeds, and observe the commandments of God, and continue in the faith of what ye have heard concerning the coming of our Lord, even unto the end of your lives, ye must perish. And now, O man, remember, and perish not.” (Mosiah 4:30) This verse shows us the necessity of taking a fuller approach to discipleship. Watching over our thoughts leads to a sanctified mind; guarding our words fosters peace and upliftment; and ensuring our deeds reflect Christlike love solidifies our covenant relationship with God.

Living virtuously requires vigilance and intentionality, but it also brings incomparable joy and peace. As we commit to refining our speech and actions, we draw closer to the Saviour and inspire others to do the same. Let us always seek the guidance of the Holy Ghost, which enables us to recognise areas for improvement and strengthens us to overcome the temptations of the adversary.

In choosing virtue, we become instruments of light in Heavenly Father’s hands, extending His love and light to a world in need. May our lives be a testament to the power of the Gospel of Jesus Christ—a reflection of the pure, virtuous, and holy life we strive to emulate in Him.
