Finding Help with Spiritual Problems

In our mortal journey, spiritual struggles are inevitable. Challenges may range from doubts about our faith, feelings of unworthiness, or difficulty discerning God’s will. As members of the Church of Jesus Christ, we are blessed with resources that offer divine guidance. These resources include the Scriptures, the teachings of prophets, and the direct connection we can establish with Heavenly Father through prayer. In this article, I want to explore how the Bible and the Book of Mormon illuminate the path to overcome spiritual difficulties.

The first and most vital source of help for spiritual problems is God Himself. Our Saviour taught, “Say unto them, Ask of God; ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.” (Matthew 7:7/7:12 Inspired Version). This promise assures us that as we seek Him with sincerity and faith, He will guide us through the challenges we face. Similarly, the Book of Mormon reiterates the power of prayer and fasting in Alma’s example: “I have fasted and prayed many days that I might know these things of myself” (Alma 5:46). This account teaches us that answers often come after earnest seeking. Remember the admonishment of James in his epistle where he wrote: “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” (1:5)

When facing spiritual turmoil, creating space for dedicated prayer and fasting can help us draw closer to Heavenly Father. Through these practices, we invite His Spirit to enlighten our minds, strengthen our resolve, and provide clarity in our challenges.

Both the Bible and the Book of Mormon are filled with accounts of individuals who overcame spiritual struggles by trusting in God. One of the most inspiring examples in the Bible is King David. Though he experienced very serious sin and guilt, he turned to the Lord in humility, praying, “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.” (Psalm 51:10) Here we see that repentance and a contrite heart bring healing.

The Book of Mormon also provides powerful examples, such as Enos, who struggled with guilt and sought forgiveness. He testified, “My soul hungered; and I kneeled down before my Maker, and I cried unto him in mighty prayer and supplication for mine own soul” (Enos 1:4). Enos’s persistence in prayer and trust in the Lord’s mercy brought him peace and forgiveness.

When we face doubts, questions, or spiritual weakness, the Scriptures offer not only wisdom but also relatable experiences of those who turned to God and found help.

Heavenly Father provides guidance through His chosen servants. The Bible reminds us, “Surely the Lord God will do nothing until he revealeth the secret unto his servants, the prophets.” (Amos 3:7). Likewise, the Book of Mormon testifies that prophets are vital for providing clarity in times of spiritual confusion: “Wherefore, by the words of three, God hath said, I will establish my word.” (2 Nephi 11:3).

Modern prophets and church leaders are equipped to counsel us on contemporary challenges. Listening to their words, contemplating their messages, and following their counsel can provide the spiritual strength we need.

Lastly, the Holy Ghost is one of the greatest gifts given to us. Jesus Christ promised, “The Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, … shall teach you all things and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.” (John 14:26) The Book of Mormon confirms this role, stating that the Holy Ghost “will show unto you all things what ye should do.” (2 Nephi 32:5) By seeking the Spirit through prayer and serious Scripture study we can receive the guidance and comfort needed to overcome spiritual struggles.

Spiritual problems can feel overwhelming, but they are an opportunity to draw closer to God. By turning to prayer, studying the Scriptures, following prophetic counsel, and seeking the companionship of the Holy Ghost, we can find divine help and peace. Our Heavenly Father desires to guide and strengthen us through every challenge, and His promises are sure for all who seek Him with faith and humility. Let us remember the Lord’s invitation: “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28/11:29 IV) His arms are always open.
