More Than This: Week 4

Built Upon the Rock

Scriptures
“Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock.” (Matthew 7:24) “And now, my sons, remember, remember that it is upon the rock of our Redeemer, who is Christ, the Son of God, that ye must build your foundation; that when the devil shall send forth his mighty winds, yea, his shafts in the whirlwind, yea, when all his hail and his mighty storm shall beat upon you, it shall have no power over you to drag you down to the gulf of misery and endless wo, because of the rock upon which ye are built, which is a sure foundation, a foundation whereon if men build they cannot fall.” (Heleman 5:12)

Reflection
The parable of the wise man who builds upon the rock is more than a children’s song or an object lesson—it is the governing principle of every soul who hopes to endure the storm. The Saviour’s words in Matthew are very precise. It is not enough to hear His words, we must do them. In the doing, a foundation is laid—one not of sand or sentiment, but of rock, immovable and lasting.

Helaman’s counsel to his sons mirrors the Saviour’s parable with striking clarity. To build upon Christ—the Rock and Redeemer—is to resist the winds of deception and temptation that will surely come. This foundation is not decorative; it is defensive. It is laid through faith, obedience, and covenantal constancy. To build upon anything else is to ensure collapse.

Those who build upon Christ are not promised exemption from the storm—but they are promised stability within it. The house stands, not because of the skill of the builder, but because of the strength of the foundation. Storms will come. Trials will test the workmanship of our spiritual structure. And in those moments, the strength of our covenant living is revealed.

The world builds high towers of sand. The Saints build altars upon stone. We are not here to construct something popular—we are here to construct something eternal.

Covenant Application

  • Examine whether your daily choices are built upon obedience or impulse.
  • Recommit to spiritual habits that reinforce your foundation: prayer, study, service.
  • Choose Christ deliberately each day, not passively.

Affirmation
Storms reveal what is eternal; the wise have already prepared.
