Reflections on Moroni Chapter 10

A Call to Come Unto Christ

In this talk, I wanted to reflect upon the powerful exhortation found in Moroni chapter 10, the final chapter of the Book of Mormon. This chapter, sometimes called Moroni’s farewell, is a timeless invitation to all the children of God to come unto Christ, partake of His grace, and receive the blessings of His Spirit.

Moroni begins with an exhortation to remember the mercies of the Lord from the creation of Adam until now (Moroni 10:3). This remembrance is an act of gratitude and faith. As we reflect on how the Lord has worked through prophets, covenants, and miracles to redeem His children, we see His hand guiding us. Do we take time in our lives to remember these mercies? Do we ponder the ways He has blessed us personally? Gratitude for God’s works opens our hearts to receive His truth.

Moroni’s invitation to ask God, with a sincere heart and real intent, whether the Book of Mormon is true is well known (Moroni 10:4-5). This promise is a cornerstone of testimony, but it also teaches us a pattern of revelation. By approaching God in humility, having faith in Christ, and being willing to act on the answer we receive, we can gain truth by the power of the Holy Ghost. This process is not limited to the Book of Mormon but applies to all spiritual questions. “By the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things” (v. 5). Do we ask God with sincerity in our moments of uncertainty? Do we act on the answers He provides?

Moroni speaks extensively of spiritual gifts, reminding us that God grants these blessings to His children “to profit them” (v. 8). Among these gifts are faith, wisdom, healing, miracles, prophecy, and more. These gifts testify of the divine and demonstrate the workings of the Holy Ghost in our lives. Moroni warns against denying these gifts, for to do so is to deny the power of God. Instead, he exhorts us to cherish and cultivate them. Are we seeking these gifts in our lives? Do we recognise and use them to bless others?

At the heart of Moroni’s message is the triad of faith, hope, and charity. He declares that without these, salvation is not possible (v. 21). Faith is the foundation, hope sustains us, and charity is the pure love of Christ that enables us to serve and love others. Charity, as Moroni states, is essential: “Except ye have charity ye can in nowise be saved” (v. 21). Do we strive to embody this love? Do we act with compassion, kindness, and selflessness in our dealings with others?

Moroni concludes with a stirring invitation: “Come unto Christ, and be perfected in him” (v. 32). He calls us to deny ungodliness, love God with all our might, and rely on His grace to become sanctified. This perfection is not achieved through our own efforts alone but through the enabling power of Christ’s atonement. His grace is sufficient, and through it, we can be made holy and spotless. Are we striving to lay aside sin? Are we relying on Christ daily, trusting in His power to transform us?

As Moroni bids farewell, his testimony resonates with timeless relevance. He declares that he will meet us at the bar of Jehovah, where the truth of his words will be made known (v. 27). His parting words are filled with hope, faith, and the assurance of Christ’s redeeming love.

I pray each of us can take Moroni’s counsel to heart. Let us remember Heavenly Father’s mercies, seek the truth through the Holy Ghost, cherish spiritual gifts, and live with faith, hope, and charity. Most importantly, let’s come unto Christ and allow His grace to sanctify us. This is the path to eternal life, and this is the invitation of the Book of Mormon.

In the name of Jesus Christ, amen.
